Conclusion

Many of the Harris women were diligent diary keepers. At Eldon House, we are blessed to have access to those diaries and the tales from the past that are housed therein. This exhibit looks at Victorian travel and the ways it is different (or not so different) from the traveller’s experience in the twenty-first century. Though the way we travel now may seem to be a far cry from the month-long boat rides of 120 years ago, there are some aspects of travel that never seem to go out of style: Not just the anxiety of lost luggage or the dread that often accompanies an arduous journey, but also the excitement of sharing an adventure with loved ones or the joy of finding that perfect souvenir.
