Dhal Tribal Shield from India, with Tigers and Deer
Date: c.1860
Created: India
Medium: possibly rhinoceros hide.
Dimensions: 46.5 cm. diameter
This Dhal tribal shield from India is enlivened by a circular painted narrative scene of tigers hunting deer. Human faces, perhaps hunters, look out from the four brass handle bosses in the centre.[11] Ronald Harris may have acquired the shield during his work abroad as a mining engineer in the early twentieth-century. Prior to this work, Ronald was educated at the Royal Military College, in Kingston, Ontario, and his military education is reflected in his fascination with military-related artifacts from Africa and around the world.
