Dhal Tribal Shield
Dhal Tribal Shield from India, with Tigers and Deer
Medium: possibly rhinoceros hide.
Dimensions: 46.5 cm. diameter
This Dhal tribal shield from India is enlivened by a circular painted narrative scene of tigers hunting deer. Human faces, perhaps hunters, look out from the four brass handle bosses in the centre. Ronald Harris may have acquired the shield during his work abroad as a mining engineer in the early twentieth-century. Prior to this work, Ronald was educated at the Royal Military College, in Kingston, Ontario, and his military education is reflected in his fascination with military-related artifacts from Africa and around the world.
