Gendered furniture is an interesting feature of the Victorian Era. This table, which looks like a plant stand, is actually designed to support lighting devices, and is called a “candle stand.” It is meant to have a piece of lighting gear on it, whether an oil lamp, or a candelabra. The piece is designed so it has a sturdy top, but also so that the piece is light, as it was meant for a woman! It was made so women could easily move the table around the room instead of relying on someone to assist them.
